Video Game Environment Concept Art and Block Out

Here we see a two actual pieces of video game art which I am producing; the first being an environment concept art piece and the second being a basic block out of that environment 3D modelled within Blender. I created the environment piece whilst discussing a level design within another student at college; we brainstormed ideas and from that I was able to produce a basic piece of concept art which we could work from. We are both fans of the game Little Nightmares and their giant environments which dwarf the player. As such, we based our idea of scale on that; with the idea of everyday objects which would dwarf the character in the game world. This made it extremely fun for concepting as I was able to produce an environment which was unique in both art style and proportion / scale to the player.

Upon completing this basic concept sketch, I then used the artwork as a guide within Blender to produce a basic blockout of how the video game environment would look. To achieve this, I used basic primitives and either extruded them or used the scale tool to get the desired block outs that we were looking for. As such, I was able to achieve not just a piece of concept art for level design but also a basic blockout in just short of two hours!

I now plan on further developing the environment by modelling the individual assets such as books, the shelf and picture frames etc and adding them to the game world. As well as this, I plan to further develop the piece of concept art which guided us by producing further viewpoints as well as experimenting with scale and proportion to a more professional and precise standard.
