Ancient Space Gateway

Here's something a little different; a paint-over I did of my 3D space portal environment which I have been working on in my 3D animation classes. To create this piece of environment art, I first create a basic block out using primitive shapes within Maya so that I could gain a general consensus of the style I was looking for. From this, I then refined the model; extruding faces and removing objects via the use of Booleans. This was then followed by further refinement and the addition of giant roots which I achieved via extruding a basic primitive along a curve. After this, I then took a screenshot of a particular viewpoint of the model and exported it to Photoshop (the software where I did the paint-over.) Whilst on Photoshop, I then produced a basic outline of the environment and structure so that I had a guideline to follow and proceeded to cel-shade the structure and its foundation piece by piece. As I am designing a 3D environment which fits around the theme of space; I sought to use a cool tone colour palette with different hues of blues and purples blending together to create a fitting environment which would allow the audience to associate what they were seeing with the cold depths of space. Overall, this paint-over process took me an hour to produce in Maya and a further two hours to complete the art piece in Adobe Photoshop.
